You probably already use these verbs. The goal here is to make the system visible—so you can choose the right verb and produce its forms reliably.

1 · First distinction

Пешком или на транспорте?

First decide how the person is moving.

Сейчас мы ___ в центр на автобусе.

Едем. The phrase на автобусе tells us this is movement by transport.

2 · Second distinction

Сейчас или вообще?

Идти / ехать put us inside one directed movement. Ходить / ездить can describe a repeated activity—or a trip viewed as a whole.

Каждый день Анна ___ в университет пешком.

Ходит. Каждый день makes this a repeated activity.

Анна уже вышла из дома. Сейчас она ___ в университет.

Идёт. We are watching one journey in progress.

3 · One trip as a story

Смотрим на движение как на фильм

A useful ABC-style route: beginning → movement in progress → arrival. Then zoom out and name the whole trip.

Вся поездка: ходил

🏠 поехал→🚗 ехал→🏫 приехал

Вся поездка: ездил

Пошёл/поехал and пришёл/приехал are here to make the trajectory visible. They are not the main forms you are being asked to master in this tutorial.

4 · The camera test

Шёл или ходил?

Шёл: the camera is inside the journey. Ходил: the camera sees the trip/event as a whole.

Когда я ___ домой, мне позвонила мама.

Шёл. The phone call happened while the movement was in progress.

Вчера я ___ в новый музей. Очень советую!

Ходил. The museum visit/trip is presented as a completed event.

5 · Beginning a trip

Пойти / поехать: начало движения

Пойти and поехать shift the focus to the start of a new trip. The пешком/transport distinction stays the same.

В прошлом

Я шёл домой = I was walking home; the camera is inside the trip.
Я пошёл домой = I set off / went home; the focus is on beginning that trip.
Я ходил домой = the trip is viewed as a whole.

После занятия Антон встал, надел куртку и ___ домой пешком.

Пошёл. Встал, надел куртку — and then began the trip home.

В будущем

Завтра я пойду в библиотеку. — a future trip on foot.
Завтра я поеду в библиотеку. — a future trip by transport.
В пять часов я буду идти / ехать домой. — at five I will be in the middle of the movement.

Compare пойду / поеду (a future trip as an intended action) with буду идти / буду ехать (movement in progress at a future moment).

Завтра после работы я ___ в аэропорт на такси.

Поеду is the natural choice for the planned trip. Буду ехать normally needs a viewpoint inside it: В шесть часов я буду ехать в аэропорт.

Завтра в шесть часов не звони: я ___ в аэропорт.

Буду ехать. The sentence places us inside the future journey at six o'clock.

6 · Forms

Standard Russian Pay special attention to я хожу and я езжу.

Choose the standard form: «Я часто ___ к бабушке».

Езжу. In standard Russian: я езжу, ты ездишь, они ездят.

The final five items require you to type the Russian form yourself, so the assessment checks production as well as recognition. This assessment mixes meaning, forms, past-tense contrasts, and пойти/поехать.
